Geoff had a fever, sore throat, chills, and felt achey all week, and was just staring to get better when Calum got it. He had two days of a high fever (105 on Friday night), which totally freaked me out. Since Evan never ran high fevers, it really scared me. I kept giving him Tylenol and Motrin, and it would not come down. So he slept on mama (just like old times), and we woke him every hour or so to give him fluids, and take his temp. After a visit to the after hours clinic on Saturday we found out our poor baby has a double ear infection, and double eye infections. His eyes were just green with goop, and streaming...and streaming.. It was so terrible to see my baby so sick!
While I was rushing to make the last appointment at the after hours clinic I was on the phone with Geoff . Evan was just waking up from his nap, and he had one of his upper airway asthma attacks (not sure what to call these scary croup like episodes since we are working with Evan's Pulmonologist to figure out the cause). Of course Geoff was playing it down, but at the same time was rushing to get off the phone. Evan woke up and literally couldn't breathe. Now that he is older and much more aware he gets so scared and then goes into panic mode (who can blame him). This makes it worse, and causes him to somewhat hypervetilate. When he has these episodes, he literally takes one huge gasp after another to get air. The onset is so sudden (sometimes we can predict that one may be coming), but not this time. Geoff said he almost called 911. It must have been pretty terrible because Geoff is usually calm and cool in these situations, even when he shouldn't be. Anyway, he handled it perfectly. We had just enough Prednisolone (oral steroid used to open the sirway) for one dose, so he gave him that and hung out in the steamy bathroom for two hours, along with Evan's nebulizer treatments of albuterol, and his inhaler. While I was at the Doctor for Calum (had never met her since it was an after hours clinic) I pleeded with her to fill a perscription of Predisolone for my other son whom she had never met...she did! Thank you Jesus! That saved us from an ER trip that night. When I got home they were in the steamy bathroom playing computer games on the lap top. I had to laugh, what a great dad! I am surprised the lap top still works.
The boys are on the mend. It has been a crazy couple of days of no sleep. It's amazing how long you can function with such little sleep. Not recommended! I always think of surgeons doing double shifts, not safe.. If I can hardly speak in complete sentences, how can they save lives..hmmm
So we did get out today in the backyard for a picnic. It was such a gorgeous day. The boys were happy to be out too. I pray for a full night of sleep.
