Zeke The Zebra and a Case of Stage Fright

This was as close as Evan got to being on stage on Tuesday night. I tried to prepare him by talking about the performance before hand, but at the same time I didn't want to focus on talking about it too much for fear of him becoming anxious about it. I thought we'll just talk about it as if it's no big deal, knowing full well that once he saw the crowd he would freeze up and probably not sing the songs, or say his Zeke the Zebra lines that he has been running around the house saying for months. I was going in with no expectations, so I thought. It was all a learning experience.

So when the children were walking towards the stage (playing their spoons) Evan was smiling (see the pic below) UNTIL...he sees Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, and Papa...then the lower lip Came out and the tears began to flow.

So instead of being on stage singing the songs he had been practicing all year, Evan watched his friends while sitting on grandma's lap.

Afterwards we tried talking to Evan about what happened without trying to sound too disappointed, and he was a boy of few words. We left it at that. There is always next year, and I figure my job is to continue to be the encourager, after all you cannot change personality. Some day we will look back on this event and say remember when you almost had your debut as Zeke the Zebra. I hope talking in front of others, self confidence, and less anxiety in social situations is just around the corner..Oh I hope!!!

More pictures from the performance!!

At least you got some really cute pics of Zeke, just as though he had performed as planned! There is always next year...

You are doing your best to expose him to these situations and he is getting SO many opportunities to grow and learn! You are doing a great job mama and Evan has come a long way! Love you!

After I finished commenting, I had something nagging in the back of my mind, and then I realized YOU are BFF, Jessica. I didn't make the connection because I thought BFF, next door Jess only had ONE son to go around. How wonderful it must be to have each other with all you both went through with your NICU experiences. I'd better stop. Because if you are not BFF, Jessica, I feel like a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE moron. Please tell me you are BFF, JEssica?
