Wordful Wednesday and A Look Back

November 2nd marked the four year anniversary of bringing you home from the hospital. I can remember vivid details and emotions of the day, as if it were yesterday.

It was a crisp fall day, and the sun was shining.

I was so excited, but overwhelmingly anxious and nervous too. I had become so dependent on monitors and had focused closely on the oxygen saturation and heart rate numbers for so long, that I was afraid to care for you monitor and oxygen free.

After we got home we had a couple of visitors.

And then we snuggled, and snuggled some more.

You fell asleep on my chest. As I lay on the couch in a dark room with only the light of the t.v., I felt like the happiest Mommy alive. Grateful for the moment. Grateful for you. Grateful for your survival.

Daddy and Mommy both got up that night to feed you. You were on a couple of different medications for your acid reflux so it took us a couple of days to get into a routine. You were used to a strict schedule from being in the NICU for nearly 80 days, so you would eat and then go right back to sleep.

Feeding was sometimes tricky as you were still learning how to suck, swallow, and breathe in sync, and would sometimes choke and cough. This of course worried us each time it happened because we didn't want you to aspirate, get pneumonia, and end up back in the NICU. You were such a sleeper, and we often had trouble keeping you awake for your feeds, and would frequently have to undress you to wake you up to finish your bottle.

We were so happy you were finally home. You survived an overdose, numerous tests and scans, blood transfusions, needles, and many IV's.

You were finally home, and we were ready to do whatever it took to take care of you, and keep you healthy so that we would never have to go back to the hospital again.

We love you very very much and will forever remember November 4th, 2004, the day our life was changed forever!

XOXO Mommy and Daddy

Here you are..ready to finally go home. You were alert and awake the first time when we walked outside with you, and stayed awake for a portion of the ride home.

Daddy feeding you your first night home.
Sweet Evan

That was a sweet blog. I always thought you would of kept him in a little bubble to protect him from the outside world because of all his little health issues. But you did not. He is so healthy now and such a good boy. It's amazing to look at him now and see that he is four years old and still going strong. We love you little Evan.

What a beautiful tribute to your son:-) When we brought my daughter home, we had a strong feeling of this child is home and it's our home. So strange.
