How Does Your Garden Grow?

Last spring we decided to attempt our first vegetable garden. Papa Tony and Evan spent the time digging out the grass, and planting the plants and seeds. We thought it would be really fun for Evan to take part in this project, water the plants, watch them grow, and then get to eat the veggies (since he loves all things green). He gets sooo excited to go and check the garden now because we are finally getting green peppers, cucumbers, and we had a couple of green tomatoes today. He wants to pick it right away, and gets so excited to eat it right away. I love how such a simple thing can bring him so much excitement. It is refreshing to see the world through his eyes. He teaches me so much each day, and makes me a better person. He also pushes my buttons nearly each day, which makes me continuously pray for more and more patience.

Since this is a learning experience the veggies are not the greatest, but we now know some things to do differently for next year. Our cucumbers are pretty bitter (which we think is because we didn't use good enough soil and didn't dig deep enough to mix the soil). It's all speculation...really! We also have some sort of insect or incests that are eating our leaves. We think it has been ants, since our house seems to have been built on an ant hill, again we are total novices at this.

Here is Evan planting in April 08
I just love the look on his face, like this is serious business.

Papa Tony and Evan are proud of their work. Evan cutting the first cucumber.

Look at my garden now.

Evan eating the bitter cucumber. He didn't seem to mind one bit.

I love how he still ate his veggie no matter how bitter it was!

Tell Evan he'll have to share his cucumbers with me. I love them too.

What a great project for Evan to learn where food comes from and to be able to see the results of his work. We took the easy way out this year and joined a farm.
